The state of Manipur is witnessing the ugly phenomenon pre-poll violence, and quite frequently, among the supporters of rival political parties.
On Wednesday, 15 people were injured and a vehicle was damaged after clash broke out between supporters of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and an independent candidate.
The incident occurred in the Thoubal district of poll-bound Manipur, reportedly, after BJP supporters pelted stones during a public meeting which was being addressed by an independent candidate.
The BJP supporters allegedly planted party flags and posters and then started pelting stones to disperse the gathering.
Supporters of the independent candidate also claimed that police teams arrived to bring violence under control but they stood aside and watched as the situation worsened.
Reportedly, police said that an investigation into the incident is underway and they also assured to identify the perpetrators.
The Assembly Elections in Manipur will held in two phases on February 28 and March 5 and the counting of the votes will take place on March 10, 2022.
