McAfee antivirus pioneer John McAfee commits suicide fearing extradition

Creator of the McAfee antivirus software, John McAfee, was found dead in his cell in Brians 2 penitentiary in Barcelona.

The incident occurred hours later after a Spanish court issued a preliminary ruling in favour of his extradition to the United States to face tax related criminal charges.
His death was confirmed by his lawyer. John McAfee was aged 75.

Earlier, the National Court of Spain approved the extradition of the detained antivirus software entrepreneur John McAfee to the United States. McAfee was wanted in the US on tax related criminal charges.
The charges that John faces in the US carry a prison sentence of up to 30 years.
75-year-old McAfee was charged with – evading taxes after failing to report income made from promoting cryptocurrencies while he did consultancy work, as well as income from speaking engagements and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary. The charges were given by Tennessee prosecutors.

According to the Spanish court’s ruling, the charges refer to the three fiscal years from 2016 to 2018.
The entrepreneur was arrested last October at Barcelona’s international airport. A judge ordered at that time that McAfee should be held in jail while awaiting the outcome of a hearing on extradition.

A Tweet by John McAfee on October 15, 2020, wrote a Tweet fearing the outcome of his death. In the Tweet he wrote that if he dies, the fault will not be his.
