Meghalaya HM resigns, curfew imposed, internet banned in 4 districts

On Sunday, petrol bombs were thrown at Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma’s residence. No one was hurt in the incident said Sangma.

After the death of a former rebel leader Chesterfield Thangkhiew, who had surrendered in 2018, was shot dead on August 13, turned violent.

On Sunday, Meghalaya home minister Lahkmen Rymbui resigned from his post over the police shooting of a former rebel leader.

Vehicle-borne attackers lobbed two Molotov cocktail bottles at the chief minister’s personal residence in Laimer, 3rd Mile Upper Shillong. The first bottle was hurled at the front part of the house while the second one was thrown behind the backyard, he said, prompting the guards there to douse the fire immediately.

The situation got particularly tensed in Meghalaya. A vehicle from Assam was bombarded in Shillong, seriously injuring the driver.

“Curfew has been imposed in Shillong due to Law & Order issues. People from Assam are advised not to travel to Shillong till curfew continues,” said GP Singh, special DGP, Assam Police, in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Government imposed a two-day curfew in Shillong and mobile internet services have also been suspended in four districts for 48 hours on Sunday.

Internet was cut in East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts from 6 pm on August 15.

Meanwhile, the curfew in Shillong, which was imposed by the East Khasi Hills district administration, was put in effect from 8 pm on Sunday. It will continue till 5 am on August 17, or until further order.
