According to the Government of India’s recent press release, the Government of India has been supporting the states and union territories by providing them COVID vaccines free of cost, as part of the nationwide vaccination drive. In addition, the Government of India has also been facilitating direct procurement of vaccines by the States/UTs.

Vaccination is an integral part of the Government of India’s comprehensive strategy to contain and manage the pandemic, in addition to the Test, Track, Treat, and COVID Appropriate Behaviour. Implementation of the Liberalized and Accelerated Phase-3 Strategy of Covid-19 Vaccination commenced from 1st May 2021.

Under the comprehensive strategy, every month, 50% of the total Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) cleared vaccine doses of any manufacturer would be procured by the Government of India. It would continue to make these doses available to the state governments completely free of cost, as was done earlier.

More than 24 crores (24,65,44,060) vaccine doses have been provided to States/UTs so far, through the central government’s free-of-cost channels, and states’ direct procurement category.

Of this, the total consumption, including wastages is 23,47,43,489 doses (as per data available at 8 AM today).
