Municipal Councilor and Police Personal Shot Dead by Militants

A municipal councilor and a police officer were killed in an attack by suspected militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town on Monday. Another councilor was injured during the militant attack.

The militants opened fire at the municipal office in Sopore during a meeting of the urban local body.
Councilor Riyaz Ahmad and police officer Shafqat Ahmad were killed. The injured councilor was taken to the regional hospital for treatment but was later referred to Srinagar as his condition became critical.
The police officer killed in the attack was Riyaz Ahmad’s security guard.
Police have cordoned off the area to arrest the accused.

“Terrorists fired at Municipal Office, Sopore. In this terror incident, police personnel Shafqat Ahmad & councilor Riyaz Ahmad got #martyred & councilor Shams-ud-din Peer got injured. Injured shifted to hospital for treatment. Area cordoned off & further details shall follow.” J&K Police informed in a Tweet.

The latest attack comes two days after two militants and a soldier were killed in a fierce gunfight in South Kashmir. The encounter was the third gunfight in Shopian, a militant hotbed, in recent days.
