The working of thousands of banks in India is likely to be affected on March 15 and 16 as various bank employees’ unions have called for a nationwide strike.
It is speculated that almost 10 lakhs bank employees across the country will participate in the two-day strike.
The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) against the central government’s proposal to privatize two public sector banks. In this year’s Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced that two public sector banks (PSBs) will be privatized along with one general insurance company.

It seems unlikely that any bank transaction would be possible on these two days.
Moreover, banks will also remain closed on:
- March 13 (second Saturday) and
- March 14 (Sunday).
UFBU Convener for Telangana R. Sriram, who along with leaders of various bank unions addressed the media on Tuesday. He stated-
“The Forum consists of nine unions representing 10 lakh bank employees and officers across the country. We demand the strengthening of public sector banks, by adequate infusion of capital, human resources and strengthened statutory framework to recover the stressed assets.”
