Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami was arrested by the Alibaug Police on Wednesday morning from his Mumbai residence for allegedly abetting the suicide of 53-year-old interior designer Anvay Naik and mother Kumud Naik in 2018.
The arrest came at a time when Arnab has been investigated relating to the TRP scam in Mumbai.
Goswami was earlier booked in two more recent cases related to his alleged remarks and defaming of Congress senior leader Sonia Gandhi in a television debate on the Palghar mob lynching incident and the Bandra station crowding incident. The two cases have been booked at NM Joshi Marg Police Station and Pydhonie Police Station respectively.
The cases were registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which includes provocation with intent to cause riots, defamation, promoting enmity, ill-will, hatred, criminal conspiracy.
The chief editor, however, alleged that during the arrest from his residence, police manhandled and physically assaulted him, his father-in-law, and mother-in-law.
Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in his Twitter handle also stated the arrest of the Assam-born managing director and Editor-in-Chief of the Republic Media Network.
.@republic Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami physically assaulted & arrested by Mumbai police is nothing but muzzling freedom of press by the vindictive M’rashtra govt. Strongly condemn this shameless politically motivated Mumbai police action. It’s like Emergency days in Maharashtra
