New Delhi: Congress party may elect their new President in January 2021. The party is likely to call its All India Congress Committee (AICC) session for electing its new President. An AICC session is a marathon process. It starts with a membership drive and election of delegates from the state-level.
The January schedule is best for the party. Except for this year’s Bihar election, there will be no major elections. Elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry will be in April 2021.
There was a Congress Working Committee(CWC) meeting on August 24. Many sections of leaders suggested for AICC meeting within one year. However, party leader Rahul Gandhi and many others gave preference to hold the session in January.
In the CWC meeting, Sonia Gandhi offered her resignation from the interim President post. Sonia Gandhi was serving as the interim president of the party since August 2019. However, many leaders including former PM Manmohan Singh urged Sonia Gandhi to continue till the new president is elected. There was a heated debate over the letter signed by 23 senior leaders. The senior leaders were seeking major changes in the functioning of the Congress party.
Sonia Gandhi has already completed her one year as interim Chief of Congress in August 2020. She was the party President for over 19 years. In the history of the party, her tenure as president was the longest.
Many party workers and leaders are also keen to see Rahul Gandhi as the new President of the party. However, he is not showing any interest to return as the President. Rahul Gandhi gave his resignation from the President’s seat in May 2019.
