In a tragic incident, ten newborn babies died in a fire that broke out at a hospital in Bhandara, Maharashtra.
The fire broke out on Saturday early morning at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Bhandara Civil Hospital, situated about 900 km from Mumbai and 65 km from Nagpur.
According to reports, there were seventeen newborn babies admitted at the SNCU unit of the Civil Hospital. During the time of the incident, a doctor and a nurse were on duty at the SNCU unit. The nurse noticed the smoke coming out from the neonatal section and immediately informed the hospital authorities.
The fire brigade was called immediately and seven newborn babies were rescued from the hospital by fire brigade personnel. However, they were not able to save the other ten babies.
All the killed infants in the blaze were between the age of one month and three months old.
The cause of the fire at the hospital is yet to be determined.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief over the tragic incident.
“Heart-wrenching tragedy in Bhandara, Maharashtra, where we have lost precious young lives. My thoughts are with all the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover as early as possible.” Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi termed the incident unfortunate appealing the Maharashtra government to provide all possible assistance to the families of the deceased and injured.
“The unfortunate incident of fire at Bhandara District General Hospital in Maharashtra is extremely tragic.
My condolences to the families of the children who lost their lives.
I appeal to Maha Govt to provide every possible assistance to the families of the injured & deceased.” the Former Congress President wrote on Twitter.
