The Oxford University- AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine named Covishield became the first vaccine to be approved in India for emergency use, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar announced on Saturday. The vaccine is being manufactured by the Serum Institute in Pune.
Results from studies which included 24,000 people in Britain, Brazil and South Africa show that AstraZeneca shots are about 70% effective in preventing coronavirus infections.
It is expected that the vaccine will be used by many countries because of its affordable rates. It can be stored at 2-8 degrees for six months instead of ultracold or freezer temperatures.
