Several farmer groups on Friday called for Bharat Bandh on 8 December in protest against the farm laws.
Bharatiya Kisan Union, General Secretary, Harvinder Singh Ladkhwal said, “Yesterday, we told the Government (at the meeting) that the farm laws should be withdrawn. We have given a call for Bharat Bandh on 8 December.”
Hannan Mollah, General Secretary of All India Kisan Sabha stated, “We need to take this protest forward. Government has to take back the farm laws.”
The government had invited the farm leaders for the fourth round of talks on Thursday, but then it remained inconclusive. The two sides are scheduled to meet again on Saturday.
The farmer community has expressed apprehension that the new laws are “anti-farmer”, and would pave the way for the dismantling of the minimum support price system, leaving them at the “mercy” of big corporations.
