Former Nagaland Governor Ashwani Kumar, who also was Ex-DGP of Himachal Pradesh and CBI director, committed suicide in his Shimla house on Wednesday.
Himachal Pradesh DGP Sanjay Kundu, in a statement, said that he left a suicide note. According to Kundu, the family members denied having any form of depression.
The police said that the investigation in the case is ongoing and a team of forensic experts have reached the crime scene and are collecting evidence.
Kumar hailed from the Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh and was born on November 15, 1950. He completed his directorate from Himachal Pradesh University and did his Ph.D. in management. He has a master’s degree in business administration with a specialization in Human Resources Management.
Kumar served as the 17th Governor of Nagaland and was sworn-in on March 21, 2013. He served the state until July 1, 2014.
A 1973 batch officer of the Indian Police Service, Kumar headed the Central Bureau of Investigation from August 2008 to November 2010. He also served as the DGP of Himachal Pradesh for two years till July 2008.
It was in his tenure as the CBI chief that the investigation agency arrested Union Home Minister Amit Shah in July 2010 related to the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case.
