News Desk: The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on July 30, issued a notification imposing restrictions on the import of color televisions. The notification states that “Import policy of color television is amended from free to restrict.”
The notification restricts televisions of sizes ranging from 36cm to 105cm, also liquid crystal display(LCD) of size below 63cm.
The items under restriction would now need import license from the concerned department.
Meanwhile, Vietnam, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, and Germany are the major importers of this set of televisions. The import of colour television in the year 2019-20 amounts to $781 million. The majority shipment was from Vietnam ($428 million) and China ($292 million).
The move aims to push domestic manufacturing and also reduce inbound shipments of non-essential items from countries like China.
This is not the first time that the government has cut the deals or restricted the deals which impact China. Recently, the government issued a notification to ban 59 Chinese applications.
