Hindustan Times Commits Blunder, Says Kaziranga is in Ganeshguri

Fake News

Time and time again when there have been numerous questions on the national media’s attitude towards the coverage on issues from the Northeast, prominent English daily Hindustan Times on Thursday morning published a fake news on a newly inaugurated flyover in Assam’s Ganeshguri area of Guwahati, interlinking the Kaziranga National Park, which puts more light on the issue.

The daily reported that the flyover over National Highway 37 (NH 37), passes through the Kaziranga National Park in Assam and has been built as an attempt to protect wild animals, including endangered one-horned rhinos, from being hit by vehicles.

Hindustan Times twisted the inauguration story with an old story dating back to September 7, 2019, titled ‘Flyover at Kaziranga to cut down vehicular threats to wild animals’, which carried that the Assam Forest Department will build a 35- km long flyover crossing Kaziranga National Park.

The English daily in the baseless news report also pinned an old quote of Assam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya. In the aftermath of which a member of the media team of the minister informed that they have lodged a protest to the editorial team of the daily.

Speaking to Headline8, an irate Guwahatian said, “This is baseless. A national daily of such stature must keep their facts right before publishing such news. The national Media is completely ignorant towards the northeast and incidents like this confirm it.”
