Chief Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, Saifullah Mir alias Ghazi Haider was killed in a gunfight on Sunday morning in the Rangreth area, outskirts of Srinagar. One militant was also captured alive during the operation.
Srinagar Police along with CRPF on Sunday launched a search operation in the suspected area as they got a piece of information that some militants from south Kashmir were hiding in the Rangreth area.
Later, the Indian Army also joined the search operation.
As the joint team approached the suspected area, the hiding militants fired upon the forces triggering a gunfight.
The killing of Saifullah can be termed as a ‘big success’ for the security forces as he was considered to be the right-hand man of Riyaz Naikoo. Naikoo was also killed in an encounter in Pulwama.
