Indian Army Chief Gen M M Naravane on Thursday was conferred the rank of Honorary General of the Nepal Army by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at a special ceremony in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Commander-in-Chief Gen KM Cariappa was the first Indian Army chief to be decorated with this title in 1950.
Naravane arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday, visited the Nepal Army headquarters and met his counterpart to discuss. His visit is largely aimed at resetting the ties that came under severe strain following a bitter border row early this year.
A statement released by the Nepal Army headquarters said, “They exchanged views on issues of bilateral interests and discussed measures to further strengthen the existing bond of friendship and cooperation between the two armies”.
The army chief general was also paid homage at the martyrs’ memorial in the Army Pavilion and received a guard of honour in the Army Headquarters.
