Jharkhand High Court on Friday granted bail to former Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav in connection with the Chaibasa Treasury case related to the Rs. 950 crore fodder scam. He was granted the bail on the ground that he had completed half of the five-year sentence.
However, the veteran RJD leader will continue to remain in jail as he was sentenced to 14 years in prison in connection with the Dumka Treasury case. Yadav was also convicted in another case related to fodder scam and earlier got bail in the Deoghar Treasury case.
Chaibasa Treasury case relates to the withdrawal of Rs. 33.67 crores during 1992-93, the year when Lalu was the Chief Minister of Bihar. He was sentenced with 5 years of imprisonment.
Yadav’s lawyer pleaded in court in September to grant his bail since he has already completed half of his sentence period.
The bench of Justice headed by Aparesh Kumar Singh granted bail to Yadav on condition that he would deposit Rs. 2 lakhs of Rs. 10 lakhs fine amount charged on him along with the sentence.
Yadav has been undergoing treatment in custody at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi for over two years. However, he was shifted to the Director’s residence after 9 of his security personnel were tested positive for COVID-19.
