National: PM Narendra Modi will announce the results of ‘Swachh Survekshan 2020’ on August 20. This will be the fifth edition of the annual cleanliness survey.
Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the announcement of 2020 results has been delayed. A total of 129 awards is for the top-performing cities and states. The awards will be given at the virtual ‘Swachh Mahotsav’. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) organize the Mahotsav.
A total of 1.87 Crore people participated in the survey. A total of 4,242 cities, 62 cantonment boards, and 92 towns along the Ganga river participated in it. The survey was completed in 28 days.
The survey saw 1.7 Crore citizens register on Swachhata App, over 11 Crore impressions on social media. More than 5.5 Lakh sanitary workers are in social welfare schemes. Also, over 84,000 informal waste-pickers integrated into the mainstream.
The PM Narendra Modi will launch the Swachh Survekshan 2020 results dashboard on the occasion. He will also interact with select beneficiaries, swachhagrahis, and safai karmis (sanitary workers). The interaction will be under the Swachh Bharat Mission- Urban (SBM-U) program. Modi will interact with the workers and others from different parts of the country.
The Swachh Survekshan has been initiated by the Government. The objective is to generate large scale citizen participation in the Mission. And also to inspire a spirit of healthy competition among cities towards becoming India’s cleanest cities.
Indore has retained the top position for three consecutive years from 2017 to 2019. While Mysuru had won the award for the cleanest city of India in the first edition of the survey.
