A computer-generated tentative date revealed that the petitions seeking the scrutiny of the constitutional validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be heard by the Supreme Court on November 2.

A total of 143 CAA petitions will be heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) S A Bobde. Interestingly, the majority of the petitions have asked for a stay on the legislation.

CAA seeks to provide a path to Indian citizenship for illegal migrants of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian religious minorities, who had fled persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan on or before December 31, 2014. However, Muslims from those countries were not given such eligibility.
