Sikkim: Around 200 tourists stranded due to incessant rain, landslides

Sikkim landslide

Normal life has been hit in Sikkim, as landslides triggered due to incessant rain have disrupted movement of traffic along strategic points in the state.

Rain-induced landslides have damaged highways and private property while affecting the city’s and its neighborhood’s piped water supply.

According to officials, some 200 visitors are stuck in various parts of the North Sikkim district.

The meteorological department has issued a red alert in the state and warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall due to an upper air trough that extends from east Uttar Pradesh to Arunachal Pradesh via Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Assam. At the same time, the rains are expected to persist.

The Greater Gangtok community has been advised by the authorities to use water sparingly while the repair is ongoing.

According to officials, the NH-10 that runs from Gangtok to Siliguri and crosses the border into Bangladesh has been damaged by the torrential rains, closing one lane of the primary road connecting Sikkim and West Bengal.
