Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare on Friday announced that he will not be proceeding with his indefinite fast against the new farm laws.
The social activist claimed that the Central Government has agreed to some of his demands. The decision to cancel the indefinite strike came hours after Hazare announced his decision to go on an indefinite fast at his hometown in Maharashtra.
BJP leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister of State for Agriculture Kailash Chaudhary met Hazare and soon after the indefinite fast was called off.
The Union Minister stated that a high-level committee along with some members nominated by the social activist would consider the demands and submit a report in six months.
The front runner of the anti-corruption movement in 2011, Hazare recalled that when he was on a hunger strike at Delhi Ramlila Maidan, the then UPA government had called for a special session of Parliament.
“Farmers are not getting adequate returns for their corps. I told the government to implement the report of the Swaminathan Commission. It was delayed by the Union Government, so I decided to launch the protest. However, the government has appointed a high-level committee and assured that farmers will receive adequate returns for crops. Therefore, I have decided not to launch the protest.” Anna Hazare said.
Asked if this U-turn will hurt his credibility, Hazare said the high-level committee would look into the implementation of the reforms, and he felt that he can trust the Union Government.
