No ‘OFF SHOP’ licenses in the state since 2001

During the question hour round of the ongoing state assembly, Assam Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya informed that the government has issued around 360 liquor licenses to “ON SHOP” (Bars) since 2016, but no liquor licenses were provided to “OFF SHOP” (Wine Shops) since the year 2001.

However, adding more ministers also said that around 996 licensed “ON SHOP” are functioning in the state, of which 360 liquor licensed “ON SHOP” are being functioned since 2016.

Speaking more on this, the minister also stated, “Assam government has increased the excise duty on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) by 25% during the first wave of the COVID-19 period last year.”

However, a Liquor License is a permit given by the state excise department to those who want to sell alcoholic beverages at a certain place.

The liquor licenses are issued only after close inspection and examination of all the details of the License holder.
