Around 40 organizations from Assam have threatened to block roads going to Garo Hills of Meghalaya from October 29.

Apart from many trade associations, the 40 organizations include influential organizations such as All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), and All Moran Students Union (AMSU). All the organizations met at Krishnai in Goalpara district of Assam and pledged to block all the routes to Garo Hills if Assam and Meghalaya fail to ease the restrictions imposed by Meghalaya. Due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, the Meghalaya government has imposed various restrictions on businessmen from Assam.

Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has strictly directed the states not to impose trade restrictions and movement of people, however, Meghalaya has not yet relaxed the restrictions.
“When the entire country has opened up for trade and movement, why is Meghalaya still imposing special restriction?”, the organizations inquired.

The organizations stated that it is unfair that people from Meghalaya can come but people from other states cannot enter.

“If they want to impose ban or entry, their residents should also not enter Assam. We will stop all vehicular movements from Meghalaya coming to Assam via Goalpara”, they added.

The restrictions imposed by Meghalaya has hit small businessmen and has also stirred a new wave of middlemen. They take goods from Assam at a low price and sell at a very high price in Meghalaya.

The organizations also met the district administration of Goalpara with their complaints and were assured a solution.
