Manipur Assembly To Hold Floor Test On August 10

North-East: The Manipur Assembly on August 10 will hold a floor test. In the floor test MLAs will vote on a confidence motion to be moved by CM N Biren Singh. Both BJP and Congress have asked their MLAs to be present in the assembly. The MLAs will vote as per their party line. At present, the BJP has 18 MLAs and Congress has 24 MLAs.
The trust vote will decide the fate of the BJP led coalition government. At present, the 60-member House has a strength of 53 after the resignation of three MLAs. Under the Anti-Defection law, four members were disqualified.
In June, three MLAs of BJP resigned and joined Congress. Four NPP MLAs, a TMC MLA, and another independent MLA had withdrawn the support from BJP.

In the 2017 Assembly election, the BJP emerged as victorious. N Biren Singh was sworn in as the Chief Minister.
On June 28, 2020, Congress-led a no-confidence motion against the BJP led government. Congress MLA Keisham Meghachandra Singh submitted the no-confidence motion.

On June 17, the BJP led coalition government of Manipur tumbled into a political crisis. Three BJP Legislators deserted the party and joined Congress while six MLAs withdrew their support. After the intervention of the top BJP leaders, four NPP MLAs later returned to the party. NPP Commander and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma also intervened in the situation.

BJP currently enjoys support from four Naga People’s Front (NPF) MLAs. One legislator of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) also supports the BJP. After three resignations of three MLAs, BJP has 18 legislators left and has the support of five MLAs.
