Just before the Assam Assembly Elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its election manifesto with many promises.
The manifesto boasts many promises for the people of Assam. There are many remarkable statements and promises in the manifesto.
One such resolution present in the manifesto is Resolution Number Five (5). It mentions the amendment of the National Register of Citizens (NRC)
Another such promise of the manifesto is Resolution Number Eight (8) which promises two lakhs government jobs.
However, at the same time, the Central Government has taken a decision that looks like the opposite of all the promises stated in the manifesto.
Because on March 23, 2021, through Letter No. 1/5/2020-NRC/15296 the Office of Hon’ble Director-General under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs of India has issued the immediate exemption to a total of 455 employees working.
This guideline issued by the government will end the livelihood of 455 employees currently at work in the NRC Scheme.
These employees as well as temporary Data Entry employees have made the dreams come true of upgrading the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Their contribution to the NRC can be considered as a remarkable task.
It may be recalled that in order to facilitate the government’s project to upgrade NRC, a number of employees were selected on a contractual basis.
They were selected through written examination and oral interview with the approval of the Register of India.
They were appointed to make all arrangement assisting the State Register of Citizens (State Coordinator), District Citizen Register (District Deputy Commissioner), Subdivision Citizen Register (Subdivision Officer), Chakra Citizen Registrant (Chakra Officer), Local Citizen Registrant and to review and monitoring the work of the project.
Since the day of their induction, they have been involved in various activities. It includes setting up of National Register of Citizens Service centres under the control of state coordinator, field-based checking, document checking, the appointment of about 40,000 local government employees from all over Assam for NRC upgradation.
But the important concerning issue now is the decision taken by Centre on March 23. This decision by the Centre will break the backbone of 455 people involved in the NRC upgradation.
It seems that Central Government gives no concern about these employees involved in the NRC Updation scheme.
The main question that arises are –
• Why is there a conflict in the decisions of BJP Central Government and BJP State Government?
• What is the need for taking such a decision just before Assam Assembly Election?
