Distinguished music director, flutist Prabhat Sarma passed away on Tuesday morning.
He was 86 and was suffering from age-related ailments.

He was one of the distinguished artists of Assam and North East India. Prabhat Sarma was a maestro of folk and traditional music of Assam.
For his contribution to music, Sarma was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi award and Life Time achievement.

Born in 1935 in the Sundaridiya Satra of Barpeta, Prabhat Sarma grew up in an environment permeated by traditional music.
He learned Borgeet in the Satra as a pupil of masters like Gangadhar Deva Mishra and Satya Krishna Deva Mishra. The great musician later received training in the music of the Satras under Narahari Burha Bhakat.
His teacher in folk music was Jogesh Bharali, and he learned the classical flute as a student of Gour Goswami. Prabhat Sarma is often regarded as a distinguished performer of Borgeet.

His death is considered a big loss to Assam, its culture, and music. As per sources, he died during his sleep early Tuesday morning.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his grief on the sad demise of the great personality of Assam.
“We are saddened by the loss of renowned musician and playwright Prabhat Sharma. He will be remembered for his invaluable contribution in the journey of music in Assam.
In this moment of mourning, we extend our deepest condolences to Sharma’s family and loved ones and wish him eternal peace of mind.” CM Sonowal wrote on Twitter.
