Back in 2010, Apple was working on the smallest iPhone, even smaller and cheaper than the iPhone 4 which the company had just released at the time. Steve Jobs, in an email to his employees dated back in 2010 has noted Apple’s strategy to make the smallest iPhone called the iPhone Nano. The email titled “Here’s my current cut” has the titles with what seems like strategy topics that are to be presented at a public event.
The title in the email read, “iPhone Nano Plan – cost goal, show model (and/or renderings).” This subheading is followed by another bullet point in the email which reads “2011 Strategy” says “create low-cost iPhone model based on iPod touch to replace 3GS.” The third subhead of the body has a bullet point that reads, “iPhone Nano Plan – cost goal, show model (and/or renderings).
The strategy meeting email does not reveal much about the device which was eventually not executed or released. In a separate email on August 5, 2007, Steve Jobs mentioned a “super nano” product, likely to be another iPod Nano version.
Apple does not use the nano branding for any of its physically smaller products, it shortly released its sixth iteration of the hugely popular iPod nano at a time jobs sent the email. Apple discontinued the iPod Nano in 2017. The Super Nano product was to be launched in 2008.
