The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee injuring her leg.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde asked the petitioners to approach the Calcutta High Court and granted liberty for the same, whereupon the petitioners withdrew the plea.
“It (Mamata Banerjee’s leg injury) could be staged. She is shaking her legs,” Advocate Vivek Narayan Sharma appearing for the petitioner contended.
The plea was filed by three practicing lawyers.
As per the lawyer; “Such incidents of election violence leads to a sustained campaign against senior officers of the Election Commission.
Therefore, an independent probe into the incident is required. The lawyers also sought framing of guidelines to handle such incidents in the future.”
The petitioners prayed for enhancement punishment for poll violence as well as the establishment of a temporary body to deal with election violence and to punish perpetrators.
