The UK High Court on Wednesday rejected diamond merchant Nirav Modi’s pleas seeking permission against his extradition to India.
The infamous Indian origin diamantaire Nirav Modi is facing charges of defrauding Punjab National Bank (PNB) of more than Rs. 14,000 crores.
Following the decision by the UK High Court, Nirav Modi lost the first stage of his extradition appeal.
The appeal was before a UK High Court judge for a decision ‘on the papers’. It was submitted for the appeal to determine if there are any grounds for an appeal against the Home Secretary’s decision.
UK High Court officials confirmed that the permission to appeal was ‘rejected on paper’.
This decision by UK High Court came after Enforcement Directorate (ED) revealed that it had seized assets worth crores in India
Meanwhile, the Indian origin businessman still has a chance to make his plea at a brief oral hearing in the UK High Court with a renewed ‘leave to appeal’ application.
