Three central Assam districts – Nagaon, Hojai and Morigaon – and hill districts of Karbi Anglong, bordering Nagaland, are under the radar of the police department as these districts are used by the peddlers as a transit route to operate the drug trade.
The drug pumped in through Indo-Myanmar international border through Dimapur in Nagaland to Karbi Anglong.
Director general of police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Sunday, while addressing a drug destroying event in Hojai, said, central Assam is under the radar of the police department.
He said the drugs originate from Myanmar and enter the state through Karbi Anglong district, which borders Nagaland. “Dimapur in Nagaland is the hub of methamphetamine tablets and there are non-state actors involved in it,” he added.

A total of 874 cases have been registered, 1,493 drug dealers have been arrested and drugs worth Rs 163 crore have been seized since the new government was formed on May 10.
A total of 198 people have been arrested in central Assam’s Nagaon district alone while 100 in Hojai, 28 in Karbi Anglong.
It may be mentioned that the police foiled two big attempts of transporting huge consignment of drugs in Karbi Anglong, where drugs worth Rs 19 crore in international market were recovered and five people were arrested including two women from Tamil Nadu.
The DGP further said that the drugs have been destroyed by burning after taking permission from court as the state does not have an incinerator to dispose of the drugs.
Meanwhile, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the police department to take all strict measures to break the supply and consumption chain of drugs and other psychotropic substances in the state.
“To save our children, we have to be strict and we must break the supply chain. I have directed the police to nab the kingpins operating the drug trade in and through Assam,” the CM said.
