Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) party on Monday staged a protest at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport, Guwahati.
The protest was staged against the handing over of the LGBI Airport, Guwahati to the Adani Group of Business.
The press release of the newly formed AJP party states, “The airport at Guwahati is named after the Bharat Ratna recipient Late Gopinath
Bardoloi, the first chief minister of Assam after independence. Late Bardoloi was a highly
respected chief minister in the entire northeast region and the country. He was a close
associate of Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle. Late Bardoloi is still revered by
the people of Assam as the savior of northeast region from the politics of its merger with
the then East Pakistan.
The airport has now been handed over to the Adani Group without any consent of the
people of Assam in violation of the federal spirit of our constitution. The people of Assam
are dismayed at the decision of the Central Government to hand over the airport to the
private sector.
Our party is strongly against handing over the management of LGBI Airport to the
Adani Group of business. We protest against the action of the central government and it
will remain an issue with us for the future also. Kindly convey our protest to the highest authority
of Airport Authority of India.”
It is to be noted that the Cabinet has already passed the bill to privatize LGBI airport. It seems that the AJP party is now using this issue as a ‘Publicity Stunt’ before the Assam Assembly election.
