Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reached Guwahati on Wednesday at around 2 AM. The Minister reached Lokopriya Gopinath Borjhar International Airport with a special flight.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, NEDA Convener Himanta Biswa Sarma, and BJP State President Ranjit Dass were present at the airport to welcome Amit Shah at the airport.
The Lok Sabha MP will also meet the descendent of Royal Koch Rajbonshi Ananta Rai at Chirang during his visit to Assam.
The Home Minister will be accompanied by Sarbananda Sonowal along with Himanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to the Koch Royal descendent Ananta Rai’s home at Chirang.
The ministers will reportedly be having lunch at Ananta Rai’s residence.
Ananta Rai heads a faction of Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association (GCPA), which advocates separate state or territory for Koch Rajbongshi in West Bengal. The kingdom of Kochs is spread across Assam and North Bengal.
Notably, 6 ethnic communities in Assam including the Koch-Rajbongshi have been demanding ST status. However, there are no reports thus far, of Amit Shah attending any public meetings during his visit to Assam.
This will be the second visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to election-bound Assam in the last fortnight.
Elections to the Assam Legislative Assembly is likely to be held in April-May this year.
