Assam: Congress leader Kamrul Islam Choudhury quits party, cites ‘directionless and confused leadership’ as reason

Kamrul Islam Choudhury

In a blow to the Congress party, Kamrul Islam Choudhury, General Secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) resigned from the primary membership of the party on Sunday.

Choudhury resigned in a letter to Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi, which was widely circulated on social media, citing the “directionless and confused leadership of the APCC during the last few months.”

Choudhury said in his letter, “Heartfelt thanks to you and INC leadership for giving me the chance to represent INC at different positions i.e., National General Secretary of NSUI, President APYC and General Secretary APCC. But the present instability of the Congress party in Assam due to the directionless and confused leadership of APCC during the last few months has left no reason for me to continue as a member of INC.”

The political leader also claimed that no action was taken against the party MLA who cross-voted in the recently held presidential election, claiming that this had “demoralised thousands of grassroot workers like me who have given blood and sweat for the party for years.”

“Therefore, I do hereby tender my resignation from the post of General Secretary, APCC and primary membership of INC,” Choudhury added.

Choudhury’s resignation comes only days after veteran Congress lawmaker Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned from the party on August 26, accusing Rahul Gandhi’s “immaturity” for “demolishing the consultative mechanism” in the party.
