Guwahati: Assam’s health and finance minister, and BJP stalwart Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said he is not keen on contesting the state polls due in mid-2021.
In a series of tweets, Sarma, the most influential BJP leader in the northeast said his role would be limited to contributing to the party in whatever other ways he could.
“As I have already indicated in several public platforms that I am not interested in contesting next assembly election; my role will be limited to contribute whatever I can for my party and for my state,” he tweeted.
For Assam future, we need to have a strong nationalist govt,” he further adds in the tweet.
“Few people feel I am after some post and position. My only ambition is to see a BJP government with 100 plus seats. In my last few months, I want to work for my state as much as possible to have eternal satisfaction,” he said in another tweet.
‘Janani Janmabhumischa Swargadapi Gariyai’ (Mother and Motherland are superior even to Heaven),” he added.

In the past few days, Sarma has been in headlines over news reports on his eligibility for the chief minister’s post.
This comes days after Pijush Hazarika, Assam’s junior minister and a close-aide of Sarma, said earlier this month that Himanta Biswa Sarma has all merits becoming a chief minister.
However with a piece of different information, a source close to Sarma told, quoting Headline8 Exclusive— BJP Buzz “Xokolute Anando, Himanta”— “any moment the party high command will give green signal to change the chief minister. As told earlier, the news is speculated to be announced by this week.”
In February last year, Sarma showed interest in contesting Lok Sabha polls but the BJP high command entrusted him to carry out poll strategies in al the seven northeastern states.
