National Women’s Day 2021- Its Significance and History

February 13 is celebrated as ‘National Women’s Day’ in India. The day is of great importance in the history of the country. It is celebrated to recognize the powerful voices of women.
National Women’s Day is celebrated on ‘Nightingale of India’- Sarojini Naidu’s birth anniversary.
This year marks the 142nd birth anniversary of the political activist and a well-known poet.
To honor her works, her birth anniversary is celebrated as ‘National Women’s Day’ in India.

The great leader was an inspiration for women across India and was the first lady Governor of the country. She actively participated in India’s fight for freedom against the British government.
Her career in literature started at the age of 12 when she wrote the play ‘Maher Muneer’ and earned appreciation and recognition from across the world. Some of her other famous works are-
• The Golden Threshold
• The Broken Wing
• The Bird of Time

Sarojini Naidu’s political career started in 1905 when she became a part of the Indian National Movement. In 1925 she was appointed as the President of the Indian National Congress (INC) and in 1947 she was appointed as the Governor of the United Province (now Uttar Pradesh).

The great political leader and poet passed away at the age of 70 in Lucknow.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to pay his tributes to the great leader and poet.

“Tribute to #SarojiniNaidu Ji on her Jayanti which we observe as #NationalWomensDay Today, let’s honour all women around us & promise to fight for their rights, celebrate their achievements and ensure their safety in society.” the minister Twitted.
