Chess Olympiad: The 44th Chess Olympiad is all set to begin from today (July 28). The opening ceremony will be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. The event is taking place in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This is India’s first time hosting this mega competition. The venue is fixed at Four Points by Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort and Convention Centre in Mahabalipuram, Chennai.

According to reports, along with PM Narendra Modi, other political leaders including Tamil Nadu governor R N Ravi, Chief Minister M K Stalin and Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur to grace the event with their presence.

India is the land where Chess originated. Just over a month ago, we celebrated the first ever torch relay in Delhi. Today, the chess tournament is all set to begin. Sports in India getting stronger every single day“, said Union Minister Anurag Thakur will attending the opening ceremony.

With the inauguration of the opening ceremony, all the eight forms of Indian classical dance, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchupudi, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Manipuri, Sattriya and Bharathanatyam  will be performed. People who gathered for the inaugural also reveled in the musical treat of Chennai based musician Lydian Nadhaswaram.

The anthem for the event is done by none other than music maestro AR Rahman. The official mascot of the event is known as ‘Thambi’.

There will be two types of events- open and women’s events.

As per reports, five-time world champion Vishwanathan Anand will not take part in this event but will become a mentor to others.

The event will start from 29 July and will conclude on 9 August. The schedule of the event is:

July 29: Round 1 at 3 p.m. (IST)

July 30: Round 2 at 3 pm (IST)

July 31: Round 3 at 3 pm (IST)

August 1: Round 4 at 3 pm (IST)

August 2: Round 5 at 3 pm (IST)

August 3: Round 6 at 3 pm (IST)

August 4: Rest Day

August 5: Round 7 at 3 pm (IST)

August 6: Round 8 at 3 pm (IST)

August 7: Round 9 at 3 pm (IST)

August 8: Round 10 at 3 pm (IST)

August 9: Round 11 at 3 pm (IST)
