Artemis I is the first in a series of increasingly complex missions that will enable human exploration to the Moon and Mars, says NASA.

Artemis I will be an uncrewed flight test that will provide a foundation for human deep space exploration, the spacecraft will launch on the most powerful rocket in the world , the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket lift off for the first time from NASA’s modernized Kennedy Space Center in Florida and fly farther than any spacecraft built for humans has ever flown. It will travel 280,000 miles from Earth, thousands of miles beyond the Moon over the course of about a four to six-week mission.
Through Artemis missions, NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon, paving the way for a long-term lunar presence and serving as a steppingstone to send astronauts to Mars.
