TRAI to launch KYC-based caller ID system in December

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) plans to launch its mobile phone caller identity system — verified by KYC (know your customer details) — within the next three weeks.

According to Mint, Trai chairperson PD Vaghela stated on Wednesday that the telecom watchdog will also investigate the new regulation while keeping in mind the “scenario of multiple screens, same content.”

The caller ID system will be marketed as the government’s replacement for Truecaller, the popular Swedish caller identification app. “Trai has conducted several stakeholder consultations to iron out the issues,” Vaghela told reporters. “The new feature should be rolled out in the next two to three weeks.”

Truecaller CEO and co-founder Alan Mamedi stated in May that Trai’s plan to develop a caller-name display system would not compete with Truecaller.

According to the report, Vaghela added that the regulatory and legal framework must keep up with new developments to ensure not only the smooth adoption of new technologies but also the protection of state and consumer interests.

“The primary area which requires attention of the regulatory regime is the convergence of content. Today, the same content is available on television, smart connected screens as well as smartphones. Owing to the difference in the distribution mechanism on these platforms, they pose a regulatory challenge. Therefore, in the new technological world of convergence, we need to deliberate on the possible alignment of the regulatory regime keeping in view the scenario of ‘multiple screens, same content’,” He stated this at the Big Picture Summit of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The organisation also intends to make changes to its tariff order and interconnection regulations in accordance with its stated policy of “light-touch regulations.” “and not impose an undue burden on consumers, according to the report.
