News Desk: The BJP led government in Manipur is now in a catastrophe situation as three of its MLAs resigned on Wednesday. The three MLAs joined the Congress party. Six other members also withdrew their support from the BJP led coalition government.
CLP leader and former Congress Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh will approach Governor Najma Heptullah to call on a special Assembly session for a trust vote against N Biren Singh-led BJP government.
National People’s Party (NPP), one of BJP’s main allies also withdrew their support. They now pledged their support to the Congress party. All the NPPs four MLAs are Cabinet Ministers including Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar Singh.
In 2017 Assembly election, the BJP-led coalition government was formed, with BJP winning only 21 seats in the 60 member Assembly. Congress party was the single largest party with 28 seats. Immediately after the election, one MLA deserted the Congress party and joined BJP. Four NPP MLAs along with a TMC MLA and four other MLAs of Naga People’s Front aided to reinforce BJP’s first government.
Trouble had been developing within the party for Biren Singh with several attempts to topple him from his ministry. It was resolved peacefully after the timely intervention of central BJP leaders.
Manipur Assembly has a present-day strength of 59 MLAs after Shyamkumar Singh of Andro constituency was disqualified. Shyamkumar was the Congress party MLA who deserted the party and joined BJP.
Recently Manipur High Court had subdued seven MLAs who left Congress to join BJP from entering the Legislative Assembly until further notice. Rajya Sabha polls in Manipur will be held on June 19, 2020.
